Why is the insurer allowed to send me to their doctor for a medical examination?

Posted in Disability Insurance Claims on March 27, 2009

Long-term disability insurance is a contract between you and the company (or between your employer and the company). The insurance company wrote the contract. Most companies write in the contract that, if they are paying you long-term disability payments, they are allowed to send you to a doctor of their choice for a medical examination.

If you do not go to such an examination, the long-term disability insurance company can stop paying you benefits.
