Most long-term disability policies have a condition which requires you to apply for Canada Pension Plan disability when you go on long-term disability. If you do not apply, most long-term disability insurance companies will estimate what you should have been getting from CPP and deduct it from your payments anyway.
If you apply, and you do not get CPP disability payments, this does not mean that you are ineligible for long-term disability benefits, particularly in the first two years.
If you qualify, Canada Pension Plan disability can also provide you with some income while you are waiting for your long-term disability insurance payments to begin, or for your case to be settled.
